When it comes to aging, your DNA is not your destiny; you are your destiny. That means your future is mutable and is mostly your choice. So what to do? Fine-tune your cuisine? Work out in the gym or go for a walk? Get a good night’s sleep? All of these things are important to a Longevity Lifestyle and play an important role but there is something equally or perhaps even more critical: your outlook. You have perhaps heard to the old adage “You’re only as old as you feel”—this is true at the cellular level. Could aging be a mind game after all? After one of my lectures, a gentleman came up and asked the reason for why, when he was around certain people, he felt better than when around others. The mind is a wonderful complex piece of machinery. Your moods, feelings, and thoughts all influence your make-up. Relax and your blood pressure goes down; take a vacation or hang around people you laugh with and your immune system picks up; take a placebo believing that it will cure your headache and, as if by magic, your headache goes away. At some level you are only as old as you choose to be research is mounting that your outlook, your personality, and, yes, how positive you are have a profound impact on not how you feel but also on how your cells age. Take ahold of your destiny; take control of your mindset.
